Let me start off by saying, if you are serious about making money online, then this post is for you. If you are not willing to put in the effort, then making money online will never work. For anyone starting out with online marketing, AdSense and Affiliate Marketing are two of the easiest ways for beginners to make money, even though a lot of effort is required on your part. However, I will just be looking at the Amazon Affiliates program today.
Starting Out As An Amazon Affiliate
There are so many reasons why starting out as an Amazon Affiliate has so many benefits. I would say there are about four main advantages to signing up as an affiliate.
Advantages of Starting On Amazon Affiliates
- Anyone can join and signing up is completely free.
- Your initial costs are low.
- You won’t lose money if you make a mistake.
- A simple business model that works if applied correctly.
It is absolutely free to join. You just need to sign up to their program. You will need a website to advertise products and start earning a commission. If you don’t have a website, you can sign up here for two FREE WordPress websites.
The initial costs are extremely low. I pay about $ 10 – $15 a year for a website domain name. Hosting costs about $10 – $50 per month. So your entire business can operate on about $30 – $50 a month. That is incredible when you think how much it would cost to actually take a loan from a bank to start a business!
One benefit I almost forgot to mention is you don’t even need to work with inventory! That means you don’t have to worry about shipping goods to customers or worrying about customers wanting to return goods or demanding refunds. Say you get a loan from a bank, open your business and buy $5,000 worth of inventory. What happens if that doesn’t sell? You going to have to throw it in the obsolete pile which means you are $5,000 down!
When starting an affiliate online business, you won’t have any of these problems. Let’s dig further and find out how you can make money as an Amazon Affiliates marketer.
5 Steps in the Amazon Affiliates Model
- Select a niche or topic for your website.
- Construct your website.
- Conduct some research on the niche or topic you have selected.
- Write high-quality articles/blogs on your selected topic.
- Link to the products you are promoting in your article.
Step 1: Selecting A Topic
The easiest way for me to decide on a niche is to identify what my passions and interests are. For instance, I know the topic or niche ‘’Drones’’ has the ability to earn me a lot of revenue, but it’s a topic that doesn’t interest me, so I scraped the idea of starting a website about drones.
- Are you into natural remedies?
- Is there a sport that you are good at or an expert in?
- Are you good with your hands? Painting? Crafts?
- Are you into fashion?
- Are you an animal lover or an expert in a certain breed of animal?
- Are you good with figures? Can you help people to budget properly?
These are all examples of niche websites I own which earn me a commission each month.
I’m an ex-insomniac so here is an example of a website I own in the health related niche:
It doesn’t matter what topic you choose, just know that there are millions of people that are interested in the topic you choose for your website. This means there are millions of potential customers waiting to visit your site so they can find a solution to their problems.
When someone wants to sleep better or find natural remedies to help them sleep, they will be able to find my website online and get some advice. The articles I post are designed to help them overcome their problem and offer them products that can ease their problem.
This is why as a beginner in online marketing, you want to choose an interest or topic that is familiar to you so you don’t get bored when writing content. I know many people struggle with finding a niche for their website, so I will be going into more detail later on about some potential niche topics you could choose.
Step 2: Construct Your Website
This was the most daunting part of the process for me. I’m not technical at all and have no coding skills when it comes to building a website. I joined an online program which has an amazing community that helped me, so I learned to build all my websites by myself. It’s not as bad as you think. Building a website is pretty simple! Sign up for free here to access the community and videos on how to build a website.
You have platforms like WordPress which builds the necessary framework for you. You will have to create things yourself though, like creating menus for your site but all that is just simply dragging and dropping and you are done!

Steps 3: Do Some Research
I love this part – research and writing the content. One of your main functions is to write articles and blog posts.
You have to do keyword research. For your articles to rank, you need to see what keywords people are searching for when they are looking for information on the internet. There are two tools I use to do this:
- Wealthy Affiliate Keyword Tool (free): Allows you to get keywords, the amount of traffic those keywords receive, and the amount of competition you have if you use those keywords in your articles.
- Jaxxy ($19 a month): Provides you in-depth information and statistics regarding the keywords you want to use.
As a beginner, I will show you a simpler tool for you to get started and for you to see what people are searching for in Google. This will help you discover topics to write about for your website.
When you are searching in Google, it will give you a few search terms that will automatically pop up. These are some of the most popular search terms people are typing into the Google search bar. This is a great way to get some topics to write about. Here’s an example with one of the sites I own. I typed ”how to insomnia” but not interested in writing any of the topics that have come up.
Let us try another one. Another way is what I call the ”alphabet soup” method. Choose your niche and start with the alphabet. I started from ”a” till I got to ”h” and found a topic which will make a great article for my site. I researched the keyword ”insomnia home remedies” and it has a high volume of monthly searches and it has a low QSR, which means the competition for that keyword is low. Great! Now I can write an article based on this keyword. I think you get the point now on how to find some great topics to write about.
Step 4: Write Your Content
Don’t be afraid of this part. Writing articles is the easy part of the process. Many people are worried they are not a good writer and won’t be able to do affiliate marketing because it’s all about selling. Most of the time casual writing will do a lot better than formal writing. So just write naturally and get your point across to your reader.
People are coming to your site because you have a solution to their problem! They want real information that can help them resolve their issue. Write like you are talking to a friend or family member. Be natural and the words will flow.
You don’t have to be a great writer to make money as an Amazon Affiliate – you just need to assist people in finding the right products for their problems.
Step 5: Linking to Products
The final step is finding the product on Amazon and linking your affiliate link to the product in your article. Someone visiting your website will click on the link, they will be directed to the Amazon site, they will buy the product, and you will make a nice little commission of between 4 and 10% based on the value of the purchase. The great thing is even if people click on your affiliate link within your content, go to Amazon and buy products that you are not even promoting, you will still get a commission on whatever else they buy.
Here is my latest commission I received in the post from Amazon. If you are a US citizen you can have your funds directly deposited into your bank account, otherwise, you have to wait for it to arrive in the post if you live in another country.
I own about 25 affiliate websites and most of them only started earning money after about 7 months, so it is a long process but it is worth it in the end. A lot of people I know started earning within their first three months of being an affiliate marketer, it depends on how much effort you put into your site and content.
Making Money Online At Home
Affiliate Marketing is just a part-time hobby which earns me a lot of commission, but there are so many people I know who are making a full-time living from Affiliate Marketing. My one client makes between $10,000 and $25,000 a month. A colleague of mine earns about $6,000 a month by advising people on his website how to buy drones on a budget. There are so many other examples I can give, but I think you get the point.
My personal goal is just to make $10 a day from each of my sites. That will be about $7,500 a month from all my websites in total if I reach my daily target. Your goal might be higher – it depends how much time you have to invest into your websites and content.
Niche Website Research
I mentioned earlier that I will go more into depth about choosing a niche website. If I could go back to about 10 years ago when I first started out, I would tell myself not to choose a niche that is too broad and remember that evergreen niche websites will always be in demand.
What I mean by evergreen is topics that will never grow old – people will always be searching for them. Examples of evergreen niche sites are love, health, and wealth. People are looking for relationship advice or a partner. People want to live a healthy life and eat right. People are looking for advice on financial matters. These are great niches to target!
I have spoken to a few of my internet marketing colleagues and did some extensive research. I have also included some screenshots of your earning potential per month. Here are some of the niches that are doing exceptionally well in 2016:
People are always looking for ways of staying fit and healthy. You could do a site on the Paleo diet, a site dedicated to healthy smoothies, or exercising plans.
Another niche that has been doing well this year. You can promote computer desks, gaming desks, how to build a PC on a budget, computer chairs, and the list is endless.
Telescopes and Cameras
If you are fascinated with astronomy then this is a great niche site to build and you can be guaranteed that a lot of people are looking to buy telescopes. Same goes for photographers, people are always looking for the best camera’s and don’t mind spending a lot of money to get the best photos.
Men’s Grooming Products
One of my sites is a men’s grooming site and does exceptionally well. Even though us men don’t like to admit it, we always want to look after ourselves. You can promote products such as shavers, beard oils, skin products, and again the list is endless.
If you are a drone enthusiast, then this is one niche website you need to build. There is so much potential in this niche and people are willing to spend a lot of money on their hobby. There are also many types of drones you can write about such as drones for aerial photography, auto follow drones, and waterproof quadcopters.
So many people do this as a hobby or another source of income, so there is lots of money to be made in this niche. DJ’s won’t mind how much they spend to get the latest turntables or mixers.
Time To Make Money
So we have gone through the outline of making money through Amazon. I hope you have picked up a few tips you can apply on your website. The point between having a website and earning commissions may take a while but commit to producing high-quality content with targeted keywords and you will earn an attractive commission.
If you need some extra training and in-depth knowledge of how to create a website, sign-up at the Wealthy Affiliate platform, chat and ask questions with other affiliate marketers like yourself and don’t forget to claim your two free WordPress websites so you can start earning some money.
In the next few weeks, I will be writing a post on what you should and must not do if you are promoting Amazon products – otherwise, they will cancel your account like they did with me. Signing up again is easy though if they do cancel your account for violating their terms of service.
